2018 Picture of the Trustees & staff - We Did it 401K!!

The Day that the Lord had made: 401k, Doubled Retirement to $100 & increased Retirees monies

What a day it was when the Trustees of the pension & welfare fund moved and approved to make major changes to the fund that set created the 401k, that doubled the pension for the actives, that increases the Retirees pension for the first tie in 18 years!  we were very proud of that accomplishment and posed for a picture to commemorate that faithful day.  we knew that we were changing lives in a major way for some time to come.  I bet the Spencer's did not take a picture when they took your 401k away...

We are at an inflection point in 2023

Dredging, warehouse development, highway improvement is all apart of retrofitting the infrastructure for the benefit of the port and the ILA.  We are at the door of this exciting growth.  It is our time but it will take organization and a 200% effort to get the Local positioned to meet the challenge:

  1. Locate land to build a new Union Hall
  2. Develop a strike Fund
  3. Restore the 401k
  4. Master contract ratification
  5. Increasing the Pension Benefit
  6. upgrade the work coordination
  7. District Contract Ratification
  8. Fast track Gantry Training
  9. Additional Training on Gantry, RTG, Forklift, TT, Ship foreman, Hatch tender and Reach Stack, lashing, porter, 
  10. Vacation & Holiday pay at the prevailing rate
  11. digitize the dues process
  12. night replacement infrastructure enhanced
  13. rein in the run-a-way implementation of time for minor offenses
  14. Safety enhancements for equipment, harnesses & gear and a damaged equipment log

Training and other...

The issues for us in 2023 will require a full-court press on everyone's part.  below is some of the past challenges that I took on that can add prospective to the challenge ahead.  See Below

Let the Work I've done, speak for me

In 2014 the potholes around the Hall looked like Beirut!

" A Heap see, but few know all that goes into keeping the Local running smoothly!"

  1. Social security numbers removed off work cards: Social security numbers versus the employee numbers on the work cards: management says that there was no interest in follow-up.    
  2. Seniority cleaned up: Groups restored, z1,z2 etc replaced with AA, BB etc
  3. Spotter training component discussed and spotters assessed via gantry operators  
  4. Trailer Bridge reorganization meet with TB: special meeting need reach training  
  5. Appoint M&R reps: Maintenance meet with the employers & meet with Terry Peters and Keith Blue to discuss particulars  
  6. Seniority committee has to be fielded and again tasked with review seniority of the individuals
  7. Hatch tender training component developed  
  8. PIT cert list expirationed 30-60-90 heads up notifications  
  9. gantry training reviewed and kick started with current trainees  
  10. Parking lot needed repair. Huge potholes.  Get Asphalt bids at the local
  11. Roofing quotes needed for the Local. Roof leaking and mold
  12. Door Arches repaired- concrete crumbling 
  13. Exterior painting - Exterior hasn't been painted in at least 12 years
  14. Exterior Lights replaced and repaired
  15. TV’s and projector/ screen replaced and 60' tv’s linked together  
  16. Hazmat, port security, potential new member orientation training curiculum developed
  17. Cruise Boat Porter Training curriculum developed for entire district  
  18. Replacements procedure developed: long term goal of returning the replacement process from the ship foreman; have to come up with a better idea to take it out of the ship foreman’s hands  
  19. Stop the ILA/JMA P&W monetary bleeding to reach full funding  
  20. Repaired security cameras,
  21. Got rid of broken soda machines and requested bids for better snack machines
  22. Front Office Furniture replaced
  23. Established a new storage unit for local because old unit in arlington had rats
  24. found new meeting chairs for the unionhall
  25. Conference Room furniture replaced
  26. Unionhall Metal Doors replaced  
  27. returned paper towels back in both bathroom    
  28. met with Southern PC and upgraded computers
  29. reviewed existing contracts: Copiers, metering machine etc,.
  30. Ended the Practice of Maintenance seniority being loss if you are out of the industry through no fault of your own.
  31. created a maintenance remind text outreach system
  32. upgraded WiFi
  33. meet with Fred Herndon and get Local's software updated  
  34. replaced Local's website
  35. secured a new Microwave for the Hall
  36. Had the outside red message board repaired and put back into use
  37. Filed a grievance with the LIGC on Maintenance seniority 
  38. Put together a power point for the upcoming contract discussions
  39. got the trees trimmed back
  40. fixed the broken lights on the auxillary lot
  41. replaced the Local's speaker system
  42. ran point on securing the 4 additional Vacation and Holiday dollars for payout 2016  
  43. Revamped the Local's general liability insurance
  44. put in a high powered hand dryers in both bathrooms
  45. Rekeyed local - Piners lock and key
  46. Established a new MOA for PIT
  47. Upgraded work card making machine and software
  48. ordered safety vest, jackets with new LOGO
  49. Requested updated list of Header & Foremen from all companies
  50. FMLA was added via protracted debate to Seniority program
  51. Met with Union's attorneys to get overview of policies and procedures
  52. Review Harassment program and training
  53. Payroll Coordinator/Container inspector meeting for clarification of duties
  54. Reached out to Trailer Bridge and SSA to address wages for 2017 per the contract
  55. Filed a grievance with the LIGC regarding the Royalty 2011 assessment - checkers are now following suit
  56. Clarified the particular of the "On Deck/On Call" policy
  57. Close out all of the old credit, association & gas card accounts
  58. lashing training revisited 
  59. District delegates for the convention and election coordinated
  60. International Delegates for convention election coordinated
  61. MLK shirts secured for MLK parade
  62. ILA Scholarship Program revamped
  63. ILA Labor Day Picnic organized and executed
  64. visited several sites in effort to secure new spot for unionhall
  65. debated dredging on TV
  66. spoke at various functions around the city on the benefits of dredging
  67. engaged in half dozen or more interviews about dredging and financial impact of the port

Election Platform for 2018

After all the work that has occurred so far, we are far from any finish line.  The Local will always be evolving and requires proactive thinking to keep the Local ahead of the curve.  Here are some of the tasks on the table for the Local going forward:


  1. Locate land to build a new Union Hall
  2. Develop a strike Fund
  3. Finish the work on the 401k
  4. Master contract ratification: including a national hours supplement program
  5. Increasing the Pension Benefit
  6. Develope the new Harassment Training module
  7. District Contract Ratification
  8. Fast track Gantry Training
  9. Additional Training on Gantry, RTG, Forklift, TT, Ship foreman, Hatch tender and Reach Stack
  10. Vacation & Holiday pay at the prevailing rate
  11. Safety enhancements for equipment, harnesses & gear
